Muslim Americans Reaching for Health and Building Alliances (MARHABA) was a social marketing-informed, lay health worker (LHW) intervention with patient navigation (PN) designed to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among Muslim women in New York City (NYC). Muslim women were eligible if they were overdue for a mammogram and/or a Pap test. All participants attended a 1 hour educational seminar with distribution of small media health education materials, after which randomization occurred. Women in the Education + Media + PN arm received planned follow-ups from a LHW. Women in the Education + Media arm received no further contact.

This publication reports results from the MARHABA Trial, which tested a culturally adapted intervention to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among Muslim women in New York City. The sample consisted of Muslim women in NYC, and the intervention was designed to address cultural, religious, and practical barriers that can affect screening uptake.

This study examined how spiritual health locus of control and perceived discrimination were associated with breast and cervical cancer screening among Muslim American women in New York City. The sample consisted of Muslim American women living in NYC, and the analysis focused on how beliefs about health, religion, and experiences of discrimination may influence screening behaviors.

This publication reports an implementation evaluation of three community-clinical programs focused on infection-related cancer prevention and control in New York City, with a particular emphasis on how community health worker (CHW) strategies were used to better reach Asian American communities. The study focuses on how these programs were delivered, what helped them fit community needs, and what implementation lessons emerged.
